EVP MORSE – 18

Alison asks Rolf if he can name any types of aircraft that would have been at the base (RAF Finningley) at the same time as me.

Morse Reads: VULCAN UND NIMROD AEW3

Absolutely correct.

The Vulcan Bomber. As a part of the V-force, the Vulcan was the backbone of the United Kingdom’s airborne nuclear deterrent during much of the Cold War. Although the Vulcan was typically armed with nuclear weapons, it was capable of conventional bombing missions, a capability which was used in Operation Black Buck during the Falklands War between the United Kingdom and Argentina in 1982.

The British Aerospace Nimrod AEW3 was an Airborne Early Warning (AEW) aircraft which was to provide airborne radar cover for the air defence of the United Kingdom by the Royal Air Force (RAF). The project was designed to use the existing Nimrod airframe, in use with the RAF as a maritime patrol aircraft, combined with a new radar system and avionics package developed by Marconi Avionics. By 1989 the Nimrod was used at Air Engineer SQN, RAF Finningley as a Ground Instruction Airframe.

PS. Notice the word UND instead of AND in the Morse. A little clue that it is Rolf sending the Morse.
